An Open Letter to Oprah Winfrey

October 2005 - www.onestrikelaw.org

Open message to Oprah Winfrey.

Dear Miss Winfrey,

I've noticed your new action to apprehend sexual predators, at your web site and on your TV show.

Apprehension of sexual predators is only the beginning to protect our children and families. Recidivism is a serious problem with sexual terrorists. Unfortunately, in Washington State, sexual predators are treated more like endangered species than dangerous criminals. Washington State builds "predator palaces" to house violent sexual predators after they serve their criminal sentences at a cost of millions of dollars to taxpayers.

If predators will be released, many will re-offend - the latest outrage was the horrifying story of Shasta Groene whose family was slaughtered after Joseph Duncan was released by the government in Washington State. The Groene family paid with their lives for the failure of Washington State to confine Duncan for the rest of his life. How many more families will pay with their blood?

Citizens of the One Strike Law campaign believe there is only one reliable solution to protect families from violent sexual predators - sentence them to life in prison without parole or release, not expensive taxpayer housing back in the communities they have terrorized.

Did you know that for 2 years citizens in Washington State have been trying to get a One Strike Law ( life imprisonment without parole or release ) for violent sexual predators on the ballot ( initiative to the people )?

The reality of WA state initiatives is that it takes $300,000 to $400,000 to use paid signature gatherers. Perhaps 2 WA initiatives have reached the ballot in the last 15 years with only volunteers.

You could provide valuable help to the OSL campaign. There are no contribution limits to Initiative campaigns in Washington.

Could you begin to direct your viewers to the OSL campaign web site so they can contribute? Would you link to the OSL web site from your web page?

They can postal mail contributions or use our secure credit card system.

Read about the One Strike Law ( I-861 in past year ) at the web site,

You can contact the sponsor, Tracy Oetting, at info [a*t] onestrikelaw.org ( toll free, 1.877.745.9592 ). Tracy has appeared on numerous radio programs about this Initiative. Here in the Puget Sound region, Mike Siegel, on KTTH radio, has made personal appearances for the campaign, and promoted the campaign on his program. I'm sure Tracy would be glad to appear with you to tell your viewers about what is necessary AFTER the predators are captured.

There are no paid campaign positions, we operate with all volunteers. Any funds would go to collect signatures and promotion.

Initiatives to the People (November ballot) collect signatures Jan 1 to the first week in July. With your viewers' help OSL could raise the necessary funds during the fall and winter of 2005 to hit the ground running in Jan. of 2006.

You can find the Public Disclosure reports for the OSL campaign at,

http://www.pdc.wa.gov/viewreports In the search dialog choose "Filer Name" of ...

CIT FOR A ONE STRIKE YOURE OUT LAW

... from the pop-up list ( very large list / file ).

Your viewers could make a One Strike Law for sexual terrorists a reality in Washington State. Otherwise your good work to apprehend these monsters will only be a temporary measure to protect families and children - they will get out again.

Thank you.

Oprah--Thank You!

Finally, someone is making sense. Today on the Oprah show Oprah stood up and said we need to put sexual predators in prison for life after the first time! Yes! That is exactly right! I want you to know that I have been asked to sponsor a mandatory minimum law of 25 years to life after the first conviction of violent sexual crimes.

Let's examine that idea. Joseph Duncan was sentenced to 20 years in Washington state, but only served a meager 12 years. Thanks a lot Washington state DOC (Dept. Of Corrections) for letting out one of the worst child molesters and child murderers in United States history. You owe the Groene family an apology and your representative should beg forgiveness!

Would 25 years have saved the Groene family? No! Even if Duncan had served the entire amount of time Duncan still would have been let out and the Groene family would still have been slaughtered! Precious little Dylan would still have been sodomized and his body burned to ash. Can you image the terror this little gift of God went through?! Can you image if it was your child?

I do not and never will support a mandatory minimum law and I won't compromise my stance just because I think it might help us to take one step back in passing stronger sentencing laws for violent sexual predatory crimes. In other words, I do believe that we can pass this tough law and we don't have to take steps backwards to get there.

The ONLY solution to this out of control epidemic is putting child rapists, child sodomizers, child molesters and kidnappers in prison for life after the first conviction.

Please write your state legislators today and demand a one strike law for these type of criminals.
